Mustafiz bowls and takes wicket in draw

Shawdesh Desk: Mustafizur Rahman shrugged off his injury fear to bowl one over in the drawn practice match between Bangladesh Red and Bangladesh Green and was rewarded with a wicket at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Saturday.

Mustafiz was left out of Bangladesh squad for this week’s one-off Test match against Afghanistan as selectors said he was carrying a back injury.

But he surprised all by taking the field on Saturday for Sakib al Hasan-led Bangladesh Red and bowled opener Soumya Sarkar for a duck in his first over before he was taken off.

Pace bowling coach Charl Langeveldt confirmed he was taken off as precaution, with the team mainly protecting him mostly for white-ball cricket.

‘In white-ball, red-ball cricket in this condition, he is a great bowler. He is very consistent. Exciting thing for me today he got a wicket in his first over and we force him to come off,’ Langeveldt told reporters.

‘At the moment, he is just carrying a niggle. For more precaution because we have a lot of white-ball cricket coming up, Twenty20 World Cup is also on the way so we left to look after him because he is our best bowler in Twenty20 and 50-over cricket.

‘He bowled one over today and then being off just for precaution,’ he said.

Abu Jayed impressed in the practice match claiming three wickets for 22 runs that helped Bangladesh Red bowled out the opposition for 125 runs in 52.3 overs.

Replying to Bangladesh Red’s 268 runs, Green lost first three wickets for 15 runs and could cross 100-run mark only after Mosaddek Hossain’s 51 and Mominul Haque’s 35 runs.

Mahmudullah, who earlier scored a hundred, also bowled for Red to finish with 3-4. Skipper Sakib went wicketless bowling 10 overs.
